Map Asset: Cosmo Canyon Again, Plus More

This past weekend, I was really itching to draw since I had bought a bigger sketchbook. I decided to redraw Cosmo Canyon from my smaller sketchbook and translate it to my new book.

The left image is the smaller sketchbook where I was just doing rough sketches and planning. The right is the finished pencil drawing on my bigger sketchbook. It was pretty fun redrawing Cosmo Canyon and getting a better idea of how things were laid out in the mountain village. The one thing I did add to the new sketch was the addition of the bar/inn that’s right behind the Cosmo Candle. I honestly don’t think a lot of this detail will show up on the map, when I actually get it into my Photoshop file. I want to do a couple more sketches of more towns before I get my digital drawing tablet out. This was still really fun and I hope to draw a little more in the coming months. I kind of had to laugh a little when I think about doing another end of year drawing blitz. I already know what days off I’ll take at the end of December but I really don’t want to do it to the extent that I did last year (2022).

Map is about 50% colored at this point. One thing I will have to remember when I get this onto my computer is to use a little more red along with the brown.

Another thing I’ll have to remember is where my light source is on my current map file. I’m not sure if I really determined that and I’m just assuming the “sun” is somewhere to the right. Shading in Cosmo Canyon might not be what is pictured here.

Finished!

Coloring done! It took a span of two days to complete but in between errands and life things.

North Corel & Corel Mountains/Costa Del Sol Area
Some time after my drawing blitz, I wanted to draw North Corel and add in a few extra bits to the area that’s not seen in-game. The colored portion is the mountain path from Costa Del Sol to the mountains of North Corel. I remember having a bit of a hard time getting this down on paper because of the layering of the bridge, the waterfall and the overall perspective of it.

One of the major assets that I want to add is the Mako Reactor that’s in the mountains. It’s one of the main reasons to why North Corel is as desolate and poor. The Shinra strikes again with their false promises. It’ll be cool to see it implemented on my map and how big I can actually make it. Again, details will be lost but if I can get enough for people to recognize it, then I’ll be happy.
