First Map Progress Post

The first post about the map progress and the continuation of the Dream Project.

I’ve been working on Mideel Island for a couple of weeks. This was in between using the old tablet and waiting for the arrival of the new one. During the time I was shopping for the new tablet, I figured out that part of my computer limitations of proceeding forward with more map progress was that I was just working on this gigantic photoshop file. Duh, that would take huge resources from my PC and lag. I’ll be breaking up the file by island or land mass and then merging the files. By taking that merged file, I can then post it on a main MAP MERGE file that I have set aside.

Laying down the topography

Not quite actual Topography but that’s what my layer in Photoshop is called xD It’s the first thing I usually do when working on a new island or area. Just to get an idea of what and where things will go, how the cliffs will sit on a flat surface, etc. This is the first island that will have something jutting up above the land mass border. That was pretty exciting to see how that would sit on Mideel island.

I mix between doing the cliffs and then adding more green textures and various green colors to the base green parts of the land mass. I also work in where the beach landings are on the various islands. The beach colors, I try to keep those consistent, it’s why I have those color boxes that I move around the document. Yes, there is a swatch panel but that takes up too much space on the tablet.

I think I have a lot of the island painted, now I just need to add the village that’s in the forest. I’ve been sketching in my sketch pad and I hope I can make it look decent. Perspective drawing is a bit of a weakness that I want to work on improving.
